the inspiration
The Garfield Night Market grew out of cityLAB’s 6% Place experiment, which asked Garfield residents and potential neighborhood in-comers what would make Garfield a better place to live. The two groups had six common goals and priorities for the neighborhood; the Garfield Night Market accomplishes each of them:
the concept
The Garfield Night Market is a community initiative: half of the Night Market stands are reserved for local residents, and licensing assistance, training, and subsidized supplies are made available to a limited number of Garfield vendors. The Night Market showcases Garfield’s creativity through colorful street lighting and the sale of locally-made goods, and is a kind of business incubator: experienced vendors draw in a larger audience and share best practices with first-time neighborhood vendors, both of which benefit the first-time vendors’ fledgling businesses.
The market coincides Unblurred, a culture crawl that draws 500 to 1,000 visitors to the Penn Avenue Arts District on the first Friday of each month. Between gallery stops, Unblurred visitors can veer into Garfield on North Pacific Avenue to check out the Night Market. There, they can to try a dish prepared by local women, sample the menu of a hip city restaurant, peruse the handmade wares of Pittsburgh artists, or pick up produce at an urban farm stand.
In its first year, the Garfield Night Market has space for thirty vendors; in its second year, we are planning on expanding the market’s site to accommodate even more vendors!
our goals
The Garfield Night Market will:
- – help entrepreneurial Garfield residents try out and expand their businesses,
- – bring outside capital into the neighborhood,
- – create a space for Garfield residents and visitors to mingle,
- – make Garfield more visible to the rest of the city,
- – and offer a bridge between the neighborhood and the Penn Avenue corridor.
